Fooditude (Contract Caterers) - Feed Yourself Happy
Sometimes we are asked to remove catering equipment, dispose of it, and replace it with new. On other occasions we are asked to re-use existing equipment at the same site but as part of a new design. However, it’s not very often that we get asked to move the equipment from two entire kitchens, transport it half way across London, and then re-install it at a new site. But that’s exactly what we did for Fooditude, formerly Just Hospitality. And, just for good measure we were asked to do this in just 12 hours, during the day, in one of the world’s busies cities!
A small, owner managed, contract catering company, Fooditude delivers fresh food across London for breakfast, lunch and dinner. ‘Our team of chefs prepares and cooks fresh dishes from scratch every day and our fleet of drivers then delivers these dishes, both hot and cold, all over London,’ says Fooditude’s Matt Byne. ‘This gives our clients access to great food on a daily basis but without having to give up valuable office space to house an on-site kitchen. We have Fooditude teams and managers based at client sites who look after all their on-site food and hospitality needs. On top of providing breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner, our on-site teams support clients by providing meeting room services, managing snack provisions and even assist with event management.’
Due to its continued success Fooditude, which claims to make the best office food in London, had reached capacity at its current sites and needed to move in order to grow, seek out new business and operate more efficiently, so the decision was made to consolidate its two central production units, one in Bermondsey and one in Angel, at a new site just around the corner from the existing Bermondsey facility.
‘KCCJ pitched for the work along with two other operators,’ adds Byne. ‘They were extremely professional, and willing to help from the word go, so we decided very quickly that they were the best company for the job.’
More than 95% of the equipment at the new facility has come directly from the old sites including no fewer than nine combi ovens of varying sizes, six bratt pans, two deep fat fryers, two chargrills, five induction hobs, three walk-in coldrooms, a walk-in freezer, two pot wash machines, six blast chillers, four upright single door freezers, eight refrigerators – a mix of counter and upright units, a mixer, a veg prep machine and a plethora of ancillary equipment including sink units and prep tables. Amongst the new items installed are an additional combi oven, deep fat fryer, bratt pan and two heated banqueting trolleys.
With such a huge amount of equipment to be shifted, in such a short space of time, KCCJ enlisted the services of specialist catering equipment logistics operator Harrison Carr to ensure that everything went according to plan. However, before the equipment could be moved KCCJ had to carry out some extensive preparation work at the new facility.
In order to receive the equipment KCCJ installed over 60 metres of 3” gas pipe at the new site, along with more than 30 metres of new canopies, complete with extract ducting and the relevant gas interlocks. And this was all in addition to assisting Fooditude’s own team with the provision of suitable connections for electrical power, water and waste.
In order to ensure a seamless transition KCCJ and Harrison Carr were on site at 6.30am on the day of the move, ready to start the process. This would have been enough of a challenge had we simply been able to walk in and start disconnecting all the equipment at once but much of it was still in use for that day’s production, so the order in which it was disconnected, packed, and shipped to the new facility had to be planned with military precision to ensure there was no interruption of Fooditude’s production schedule. Just for good measure we also took the opportunity to give each piece of equipment a thorough clean before transporting it to its new home.
Despite the challenges presented by the project the new facility was operational by 8.30pm that same day, a testament to the exceptional design, planning and installation capabilities of the KCCJ team and Harrison Carr.
‘KCCJ’s attention to detail, their willingness to follow up on all aspects of the move and making sure they were on-site at key moments was pivotal to the move going well,’ says Byne. ‘They were thoroughly professional throughout, managing the project brilliantly and liaising with all contractors to ensure the project stayed on track and was completed on time. Their ability to communicate effectively and always follow through with what they said they would do really set them apart. Furthermore, since completion, their after-sales care has also been exceptional.’
