Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus (REEC) - Twickenham
Although best known for its expertise relating to the design, specification and installation of commercial kitchens, KCCJ’s skills extend way beyond these disciplines, as a recent project undertaken at Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus (REEC) clearly demonstrates.
Richmond upon Thames College, Haymarket Media Group, Harlequins, Clarendon School, Richmond Council and Achieving for Children have been working together to create an Education and Enterprise Campus on the College site on Egerton Road in Twickenham.
The Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus will deliver:
- New state of the art college buildings
- A new school (The Richmond upon Thames School) to address the local demand for additional secondary school places
- Re-provision of Clarendon School and the Newhouse Centre in new building facilities.
In 2012, a consultation was carried out with local residents that showed 53% of those who took part were in favour of the proposals to redevelop the site, with 71% saying that the buildings and facilities would be positively affected and the choice and diversity of secondary schools within the borough would be improved. The Campus, in addition to benefiting the education of local young people, will deliver real benefits to the wider community.
KCCJ initially successfully won the tender issued by main contractors Willmott Dixon for catering equipment supply and installation. It was when the team attended the pre-contract meeting that extract canopies were added to our package as well as the Whiterock for the whole school.
As part of the overall project, KCCJ supplied and fitted more than 280 pieces of Whiterock White™ cladding in various areas of the school campus including toilets, shower rooms and specialist classrooms. The cladding was required in a variety of different colours and sizes, which meant that each piece had to be cut to size on site, a task made even harder by the fact that rather than being done in one hit, different areas were completed at different times meaning that KCCJ were constantly on and off site, often with very little notice, during a project that lasted nearly 6 months!
By comparison, the installation of the main kitchen area was much more straightforward. Providing meals for around 750 pupils in total, the catering facility is now home to a wide range of equipment from some of the industry’s leading manufacturers including: Hobart, Foster, Rational, Falcon, Merrychef and Instanta. In addition, there is a very impressive Moffat servery counter containing a mix of chilled, ambient and heated sections. Additional fabrication included a main island canopy, a condense hood in the dishwash area and a service spine to hide the various M&E services. In fact, the kitchen has everything required to deliver an extensive menu in line with current school food guidelines.
KCCJ once again demonstrated its outstanding ability to work around the many challenges of working in a “live” project environment where deadlines and programmes are constantly changing.
"KCCJ carried out an extremely efficient installation of the kitchen at the REEC project, the end product also looks great and is going to go a long way towards improving the school lives of all the children fortunate enough to attend these schools."
