KCCJ recently completed the refurbishment of two kitchens at the Yarrow Hotel in Broadstairs;
One on the ground floor which serves the function and banqueting suites and the other one on the first floor where dishes are prepared for the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. The project, worth in excess of £250,000.00, was particularly challenging for us at KCCJ as we had to base our schedule of works around numerous different windows of opportunity presented to us by the main contractor, often at very short notice, during an extended period of redevelopment that lasted more than 12 months.
Aside from assisting with the redesign of both kitchen layouts and supplying the equipment, which included cooking suites, ovens, warewashing, refrigeration and coldrooms, we were also required to provide a specialist ventilation system to avoid the costly removal of iron pipework between floors in the 100 year-old Grade 11 listed building. We also called in our structural engineer to carry out a stress test of the floors to ensure that they were capable of supporting the weight not just of the cooking suites, but of all the other equipment in the kitchen, as well as the staff.
Despite all of these challenges we at KCCJ managed to hand over the project within the very strict budget guidelines specified, by streamlining the layout and simplifying the mechanical and electrical aspects of the project without compromising on the original brief.
